Ben Barker - Michelin Australia Sportsperson of the Year

DATE ADDED: Thursday 8 December 2011

Ben Barker has been named the inaugural Michelin Australia Sportsperson of the Year – a new award for the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia.

The award recognises the driver who most reflects the core values of Michelin; safety, performance and respect.

Michelin Australia Managing Director, Thierry Martin, congratulated Ben and said Michelin was proud to recognise his performance this year.

“Michelin strives to deliver sustainable mobility, whilst up holding our values of safety, performance and respect,” said Mr Martin.

“The Michelin Australia Sportsperson of the Year award is not just about racing performance, but about their behaviour and attitude on and off the track. The winner is a driver who, at all times, drives safely and cleanly.

“We are keen to reward those drivers who have the balance of performance and safety, I congratulate Ben for achieving this in 2011.”

The Driving Standards Adviser (DSA) for the category, Cameron McConville, was chosen as the independent judge of the award, taking into consideration the performance of all the drivers in the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia.

Michelin Australia also confirmed the award would be on offer in 2012 as well. In 2012 points will be awarded after each round and it will again be determined by the DSA.

The 2011 Michelin Australia Sportsperson of the Year was presented to Ben Barker by the Michelin Man at the end of year awards ceremony inside the Homebush Circuit.

The 2011 Championship has been a close fight all year with Craig Baird crowned 2011 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia Champion this weekend.

Globally Michelin’s involvement with Carrera Cup is more than just supplying tyres; it is a technical partnership with designers from Michelin working closely with Porsche to develop a tyre that ensures the optimum performance of the cars on which it is fitted.

With a racing pedigree built on championship and race wins in motorsport categories across the globe, the Michelin name is synonymous with delivering a quality motorsport product that performs well, is reliable and allows teams be more fuel efficient.

After being tested in the extreme conditions of a race track, innovations that increase tread life, ensure sustainable tyre performance, improve safety and enhance energy efficiency are then used to develop Michelin passenger car tyres.
